Codiac Regional RCMP are continuing their crackdown on open air drug use in the community.
At Monday’s regular Moncton City Council meeting, Superintendent Ben Jolette said officers try to educate individuals on the street and point them to mental health and addictions services.
“What do you need? What do you need for that second chance, third chance, or fourth chance? Do you need a phone to call a family member? We try to see if we can get them off the street.”
Jolette said many individuals are already aware of available services but are still fighting their addictions.
“If I can advocate for anything, what I see we need in the community is more addiction services. This comes just in speaking to the individuals that are using on the street.”
In the last four weeks, Jolette noted officers made 14 disruptions of open air drug use, checked 21 individuals, issued nine arrest warrants and seized drugs and related materials such as pipes and syringes.
