Moncton City Council has taken a look at the key performance indicators (KPI’s) for Codiac RCMP which will be used to measure the effectiveness of the force going forward.
Charles Savoie, Codiac RCMP Strategic Planning and Policing Support Services director, gave a presentation on the KPI’s to councillors during a Committee of the Whole meeting on Monday.
Some of the indicators include response times, impaired driving charges, rate of property crimes, rate of crimes against persons, chargeable drug occurrences and the average crime severity rate compared to other metro areas.
Deputy mayor Bryan Butler said he wants to know when officers are more proactive rather than reactive.
“There is nothing to show that the officers are out doing patrols and catch someone doing a break and enter. I think self-generated reports mean a lot. It shows that they are out there being proactive.”
Councillor Shawn Crossman thought that the number of calls for service could be much higher.
“There are a lot more people that aren’t calling in because they’re getting frustrated. They’ve called in once, twice, three times and they’re not getting the service that they feel the RCMP should be giving.”
Crossman noted how he hears from frustrated businesses a lot and the downtown core is the city’s largest tax base.
He wants to see Codiac RCMP and the Codiac Regional Policing Authority (CRPA) sit down and meet with members of Downtown Moncton Centreville Inc. (DMCI) to discuss the concerns of downtown business owners.
