NB Power’s Enhanced Energy Savings Program has proven to be extremely popular with more than 13,000 applications received.
Homes which qualify could receive a free heat pump with installation and other efficiency upgrades such as insulation and air sealing.
NB Power spokesperson Dominique Couture said the $30 millon budget should allow about 3,000 homes to be upgraded in this fiscal year, 2022-23.
Couture said another $10 million will cover 1,000 more homes in the next fiscal year, 2023-24, which starts in April.
While one company was initially chosen as the service provider, Couture said NB Power now has 21 additional heat pump contractors on its list.
To date, Couture said about 1,100 heat pumps have been installed and work is underway on roughly 400 more homes.
With another $40 million announced in December for the baseboard heater program and oil heating customers, NB Power issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for more service providers to complete assessments.
The RFQ closed on January 10 and Couture added the new service organizations are expected to be in place shortly.
