The mayor of Moncton believes the municipality’s new active transportation plan will help address concerns about cycling safety in the city.
In a year-end interview with 91.9 The Bend, Dawn Arnold noted how the plan includes hiring an active transportation coordinator who will oversee its implementation.
“To ensure that from all points in our city, ultimately you will be able to safely get to your destination. Someone who will be looking at this throughout the city and making those connections,” said Arnold.
A cyclist was killed in Moncton last fall following a collision with a truck on Connaught Avenue.
A number of accidents involving bicycles and vehicles were also recorded last year.
Arnold also mentioned further trail construction is on the horizon in the city.
She said trails separate cyclists from motorists and create a greater sense of security especially for families who want to cycle together.
Arnold cited the ongoing construction of the Panacadie Trail which will be a seven-kilometre link from the Riverfront Trail to Mapleton Park.
The mayor added the city also has to do a better job on signage to ensure cyclists – especially newcomers to Moncton – have a better idea of where they are going.
