Atlantic Canada’s largest employee-owned engineering firm is crossing the street to set up a bigger shop in downtown Moncton this summer.
Brennan Thorne, manager of the Moncton office of CBCL Engineering and Environmental Design Services and a professional engineer by trade, confirmed in a call with Huddle the firm plans to move across the street this June.
Thorne said the move is on account of CBCL outgrowing its current nearly 3,500-square-foot space at 68 Highfield St.
“I’m staring out my window watching the guys over there work, so there’s some anticipation building. We’re excited about the new location,” said Thorne.
CBCL will be moving to a new approximately 4,800-square-foot location at 70 Highfield St., in a building owned by Ashford Properties.
“The industry’s been quite active in the development of infrastructure and there’s a lot going on. It’s a growth in the industry and our new office will help with that growth. We’ve hired some more people and one of our targets as a company over the last few years has been to grow – so we want to continue that trend and add staff,” said Thorne.
Thorne noted there’s plenty of work and the industry in general is seeing growth, with all the new construction going on in the Greater Moncton area.
While there’s no specific immediate hiring plan in the works, Thorne said the new location has room for 29 people–a significant jump up from the 17 people currently working at the Moncton office.
Although he declined to speak about the cost of the move, Thorne said the fit-up work for CBCL’s new location is being carried out by Riverview-based Avant Garde Construction Management.
The multidisciplinary firm, headquartered in Halifax, specializes in structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering projects for public and private clients. Its most recent projects of note in Moncton include the TransAqua Wastewater Facility, the Turtle Creek water treatment facility.
Thorne noted the plans to move come in a time of significant change for CBCL, after the company recently rebranded with the help of Revolve Branding and Marketing, a Bedford-headquartered marketing agency.
CBCL, which launched in 1955, employs more than 300 people at two locations in Nova Scotia, three in New Brunswick, one in P.E.I., one in Newfoundland and Labrador, and one in Ontario.
