New Brunswick’s chief coroner has announced the inquest into the death of Chantel Moore set for early December has been pushed to February 22nd.
Moore, a 26-year-old Indigenous woman, was shot and killed in June 2020 by a member of the Edmundston Police Force during a wellness check.
The inquest is expected to last four to six days at the Edmundston Convention Centre.
This is a formal court proceeding with presiding coroner Steve Gibson and a jury who will hear evidence from witnesses to determine the facts surrounding the death.
The jury will make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths in the future.
The Coroner Service is an independent fact-finding agency which may not make any finding of legal responsibility.
The inquest will be conducted in French and there will be simultaneous translation.
Jury selection begins at 9 a.m. on the first day.
The inquest is open to media and the public.
COVID-19 restrictions will be in place with proof of vaccination and ID required for those who attend.
