A new bridge connecting Moncton and Riverview has been decades in the making for the Petitcodiac Riverkeeper.
Founded in 1999, they set out to restore the ecological health of the Petitcodiac and Memramcook River watersheds.
On Friday, the Petitcodiac Riverkeeper reached a momentous achievement.
“To me, this represents what a community can accomplish when it gets together with an objective,” said Marco Morency, a Riverkeeper Board Member, about the opening of the bridge.
“This is a victory for all the advocates of the river. We made it!” said Morency.
Built in 1967, the Causeway blocked the water passage of the river and negatively impacted fish migration.
“The ecosystem is really getting back in shape. We see the fish species coming back. I expect an increase just as we saw in 2010 when we opened the gates,” he said.
“So, there should be another wave of replenishment…of the population but also, the wildlife around it.”
The bridge has yet to receive a formal name.
