The Beauséjour Family Crisis Resource Centre received an outpouring of community support from runners and walkers in the annual Run for Women event which was held earlier this month.
Over $128,000 was raised which will help develop a trauma-specialized daycare at the centre.
CEO Kristal LeBlanc says a child who comes from a home with domestic violence needs more than just a regular daycare.
“So if they go to this daycare and don’t share their fears and can’t connect with any kids – it’s not the same experience – and they are going to be labelled as too shy or introverted or considered delayed in communicating. But really it’s because of the trauma.”
LeBlanc says the daycare is needed to allow victims to complete the recovery process by being able to attend counselling or support groups.
She adds three-quarters of victims who come to the centre are families.
The trauma-specialized daycare could be the only one of its kind in North America when it opens in 18 months.
