Girls can play too, that from a Board member with the Greater Moncton Football Association.
Joel Irvine says they’ve launched a free program for girls between the ages of 10 and 17, in an effort to introduce females to the sport, “While Removing that perceived intimidation of what football is all about and that it is a guys sport only. At the end of the day, I have been tagging everything with the #SheCanPlayToo and I firmly believe that.”
He says they hope this will help remove the stereotypes from the game, “We can give girls a specific opportunity that is focused on them and give them that opportunity to play with their peers. I think that is great and I think we need to try to support that in any way possible.”
Irvine says the hope is that the girls will bring their friends, and by the end they’ll have 50 of them on the field.
There’s no registration. The program is being held for on Monday nights from 6:15 to 730pm at the Bessborough School field.
All the girls need is comfortable clothing and a pair of running shoes.
Irvine says the girls will learn the skills needed for both flag and tackle football.
