An oversight committee has begun investigating a mysterious brain disease of unknown cause which has affected 48 New Brunswickers.
The provincial government has named Dr. Natalie Banville of Vitalité Health Network and Dr. Edouard Hendriks of Horizon Health Network as co-chairs of the committee.
Dr. Hendriks outlines some of the work the committee will be doing.
“To provide a second level of expertise, review the cases, making sure that nothing has been missed and provide some further suggestions for investigation or treatment.”
Dr. Hendriks says researchers will be working closely with officials from Public Health.
“In order to find what I would call commonalities between the cases and speed up access to a diagnosis or a cause and potentially to a treatment.”
Six individuals have died from the mysterious brain disease.
Most cases have been reported in the northeast and southeast regions of the province.
