The Moncton Fisher Cats are ready to get back in action at Kiwanis Park.
A New Brunswick Senior Baseball League season has faced uncertainty with the Chatham Ironmen and Fredericton Royals not participating.
While there was concern that the Fisher Cats season would face a similar fate, the team is set to take the field on Thursday.
“The last month has been a lot of ups and downs so we’re very excited by the idea of getting back on the field to start the season,” said Moncton Fisher Cats Head Coach Patrick Tardif.
Moncton’s first league game since winning the 2019 Championship will be in Saint John against the Alpines. The two teams will travel back and forth in June for a total of 10 games.
Public Health guidelines will mean just 50 fans will be able to attend the games. The league awaits indication from the Government of New Brunswick and Baseball New Brunswick before they can allow more fans in the stands.
“People in Moncton are excited about baseball returning to Kiwanis, and I think they are craving some entertainment,” said Tardif.
More good news for the Fisher Cats came in the form of a potential Atlantic Bubble.
With PEI expected to allow Atlantic Canadians across the border starting on June 27, the Charlottetown Islanders will be allowed to join the action.
According to Tardif, a tentative doubleheader has been scheduled in PEI on July 1 if all goes as planned.
With much of the uncertainty out of the way, the Fisher Cats can turn their focus to battling their way to another championship.
Following the regular season, a double round-robin will occur between Moncton Saint John and Charlottetown. The top two teams will play a seven-game series for the league title.
