A small group is planning a vigil in front of Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Ginette Petitpas Taylor’s office today advocating for a Guaranteed Basic Income for all Canadians.
The United Church of Canada is encouraging everyone to support the idea by lighting a candle during the noon hour.
Reverend Steve Berube of St. Paul’s United Church in Riverview will be part of the vigil.
“Pandemics create an opportunity for societies to examine priorities. Certainly, COVID-19 has laid bare many of the holes in our social safety net,” said Rev. Berube.
“It is a new season and we believe that God calls us to mend what is broken. It is time for Canada to recognize the importance that all citizens should be able to live in dignity. A Guaranteed Liveable Income would uplift people in need and the economy as a whole.”
The vigil coincides with the national party conventions of both the Liberals and New Democrats this weekend.
The event is expected to get underway at 12:30 p.m. in front of the MP’s office at 272 St. George Street.
