Plans for a Queensway Drive development are on hold.
Fen’s Market Inc. is proposing to develop a new commercial lot at the corner of Queensway
Drive and Mapleton Road.
The proposed plaza would include an eight-pump gas station, 10 EV charging stations, Starbucks and Denny’s.
Moncton City Council heard several objections from residents, including George Somers who has lived there for 23 years.
“The traffic impact study has not addressed the safety and traffic flow concerns of the residents of the subdivision. Unfortunately, the study had a very limited scope, and amongst other things, did not answer the following questions. What impact will traffic exiting from the city have on the increase in traffic flow on Queensway Drive?” Somers expressed.
“The study stated that there would be no traffic increases from Mapleton and traffic exiting the city going either to their Starbucks or the Denny’s restaurant. This simply is not realistic.”
Somers also said that there are safety concerns because Queensway is a very narrow two-way residential street. He says it was developed for limited access to the subdivision and entrance to Camper’s City.
“Another clear oversight of the traffic impact study, pedestrian traffic on Queensway was not fully addressed,” Somers told City Council.
Councillor Bryan Butler proposed a motion to pause the proposal because there were so many unanswered questions from residents.
“Is it possible to put this off so we can get a few more answers done regarding traffic?” Butler asked.
“I think that there are questions here that need to be answered because there are enough citizens here that are concerned. As an elected official who looks after these people, not my ward, but I know a lot of them over the years. Even if I didn’t know them, I think it would be appropriate for us to wait to get these answers. I think we have to listen to their concerns.”
Two Councillors voted against the pause, Monique Leblanc and Susan Edgett.
