Seniors are invited to share their input into Moncton’s services and programming.
A new resource was added in the 2025 budget year to hire a dedicated community development officer, whose sole purpose would be to focus on seniors and youth.
“We want to hear from seniors about the types of recreation opportunities they are currently participating in, what they would like to see in our community, and what are some of the barriers when they participate in those activities,” Community Services General Manager Isabelle Leblanc says.
A public engagement portal is available through Let’s Chat on the City of Moncton website. Seniors are invited to fill out a short survey, that will help to evaluate what kind of programming currently exists and what they would like to see added.
“We also have seven sessions that we are hosting in the public in the next seven to eight days. If they want to come talk to us, share some of their ideas, and perhaps answer the survey on-site. We also have a few more engagements, and exercises that will help people as they think through the process. That’s a touch point. Not everybody wants to fill out a survey online, so we feel that is an added value,” Leblanc adds.
The City will also be speaking directly with some of the partners, and organizations who are currently offering senior programming, or who are interested in offering senior programming. Leblanc says they’re hoping all of the information combined together will give them a good picture of what the senior population is currently participating in.
“One important note is that our senior project demographic starts at 55. So it’s 55 plus, and activities are not just physical activities. It could be artistic activities, it could be social activities. So it’s really anything that people would like to see, as far as programming for seniors in the City of Moncton.”
The last public engagement session will be held on January 24, and the survey is available online until February 10.
Once all of the information is compiled, staff will make a recommendation to Moncton City Council. Leblanc expects that will happen in the next month or two.
