Prominent Canadian artist Tom Forrestall has passed away.
Based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, he died Friday after a brief illness. He was 88.
Forrestall studied under Alex Colville. In the 1960s he won recognition during a renewed interest in realist painting.
One of Forrestall’s best-known works is Island in the Ice, depicting Devils Island surrounded by ice floes in Halifax Harbour. It hangs permanently at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
Forrestall’s work can be found in galleries across Canada, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
