Megan Mitton will once again represent Tantramar in the New Brunswick legislature.
But she says unfortunately only two Greens received enough votes this time around.
“New Brunswickers clearly voted to get rid of Blaine Higgs, and in this red wave, unfortunately, an amazing MLA Kevin Arseneau got swept away. I’m heartbroken that Kevin won’t be with us in Fredericton. I think it’s a loss for the province, and he was just such a strong voice for so many people. But I’m really proud to go back to the legislature, to work with our leader, David Coon, and to be a strong opposition party.”
Mitton says she started door-knocking before the election was officially called, and she didn’t take anything for granted. She adds that the province had some amazing green candidates, and many came in second place.
“I think that we’re still building, but I know this was a change election, and a lot of people’s priorities, mine included, was to get rid of Mr. Higgs,” Mitton adds.
Our newsroom asked Mitton what it would be like for the Greens to be sitting opposite the Liberals instead of the Progressive Conservatives.
“It’ll be a new experience, so I’m looking forward to getting back in the legislature, and talking about change. We desperately need real change in health care. We need good schools and housing and safe roads and for people to be able to make ends meet. I’m going to hold their feet to the fire and make sure there’s actual, real change.”
Around 35 per cent of the MLAs elected this week are women, and Mitton describes that as a milestone. ,” It’s a step in the right direction for continuing to have our female population in New Brunswick represented.”
Mitton will now be turning to constituency work to serve anyone who is in need or wants support immediately. She adds that healthcare is her priority.
