With a provincial election just two months away, candidates in Riverview area ridings will get the chance to speak.
They’ll be invited to present their platforms at a special town council meeting in August or September.
“Part of our membership with the Union of Municipalities, there is a heavy emphasis this year going into the provincial election that we want to make sure we are talking to the provincial parties with a unified voice focused on priorities that all Municipalities New Brunswick would like to see,” CAO Colin Smith told Riverview council this week.
Council requested that candidates outline how they will address five Union of Municipalities of New Brunswick priority objectives if elected in the upcoming election.
These include how they will create a stronger and more unified provincial-municipal partnership, complete the work of municipal reform in New Brunswick by fulfilling the commitment to a new fiscal framework, help address housing affordability, build the right kind of housing supply to support population growth and take action on shared goals to end chronic homelessness.
They would also like to know how the party will establish a distinct Urban Housing Strategy for New Brunswick’s largest urban centres and conduct a comprehensive provincial policing review in consultation with municipalities, with a fair funding model to ensure appropriate community presence and visibility.
Candidates will be given 15 minutes each to present their platform, followed by a question period. A date will be set soon.
The provincial election in New Brunswick will be held no later than October 21.
