The Town of Shediac is getting a bigger and better fire hall.
This week, Shediac Town Council approved $8.6 million for an extension on the current building.
“It’ll be doubling approximately the size of our current station in order to accommodate the length of the new ladder truck that’s being that’s being ordered,” Deputy Fire Chief Julien Boudreau says.
He adds the Town of Shediac has grown over the past several years and they are running out of space at the current Fire Hall.
“There were some activities that we couldn’t undertake because of the lack of space. So now we’re going to have space for training. We’re going to have space to store some of the equipment that we need for different skills. For example, boat rescue and off-road rescue and stuff like that. We had no room to store the equipment needed to do those tasks efficiently,” Boudreau adds.
Shediac Town Council approved the financing for the ladder truck and Fire Station expansion on Monday night
The $2.6-million ladder truck will be a first for the community.
“We always made use of mutual aid agreements with our neighbouring cities in terms of Dieppe and Moncton for ladder trucks. So we never had our own ladder truck in Shediac. This will be a first for us, and it’ll allow us to more efficiently and safely deal with any incidents that we have in and around the town of Shediac,” Boudreau told our newsroom.
The new truck is being ordered this week, but it’s about a three-year wait before it is received.
Construction on the fire station expansion is expected to get started in the near future, with completion in the fall of 2025.
