Moncton city council has approved the rezoning for a McLaughlin Drive area residential development.
An application was received from ATMJ Properties Ltd. to rezone lands located on the north end of McLaughlin Drive, just south of the Trans-Canada Highway, from a Two-Unit Dwelling Zone to a Residential Mix Zone, Multiple Unit Dwelling Zone, and Community Use Zone.
The amended project now includes 458 units, which are townhouses and apartment buildings between one and five storeys in height.
There will be 24 townhouses, 56 low-rise multi-units, and 378 high-rise multi-units.
The original proposal was for 512 units, and the project has also been pushed back closer to the highway.

At a public hearing in January that lasted several hours, residents raised concerns about the original proposal including traffic, crime, noise, and communications.
“For all of the citizens out there, you may or may not be all satisfied but at least we’re trying to see a win-win or at least a compromise that will move this project through, because we do need the housing, and fast,” Councillor Daniel Bourgeois said.
Planning and Development Director Bill Budd said they’re making some improvements.
“We’re working with the city clerk’s office and communications on making improvements to the website on what information is there and how the community can get involved to provide input,” said Budd.
Council voted 10-1 in favour of the amended project. The one nay vote was Councillor Paul Richard.
