A controversial rezoning on Buckingham Avenue has been narrowly approved by Riverview Town Council.
The rezoning from R1, single unit dwelling, to R3, multiple unit dwelling, will pave the way for the development of two three-storey apartment buildings between Riverview High School and Buckingham.

During the regular monthly meeting on Monday, the council vote on second and third readings was 4-3 after mayor Andrew LeBlanc cast a tie-breaker.
“It does provide a lot of the answers that we were looking for and it helps us with our housing issue. So it may not be popular but it is the right decision and it is the responsible thing.”
Councillor Heath Johnson also voted in favour noting how the town is growing but has a record low vacancy rate.
“Irrespective of the decision that is made on this proposal, I think we heard loudly that there is a bylaw enforcement issue on Buckingham that we need to address. There are also speeding issues and crosswalk issues that need to be addressed.”
Councillors Cecile Cassista and John Coughlan also supported the rezoning.
The nay votes came from councillors Wayne Bennett, Jeremy Thorne and deputy mayor Sarah Murphy.
Councillor Russell Hayward declared a conflict and excused himself from the vote.
