Travellers can expect delays on the Confederation Bridge this spring due to scheduled maintenance work.
Strait Crossing Bridge Limited (SCBL) said travel will be disrupted from Monday, April 24 to Friday, June 16 for the replacement of an expansion joint about one kilometre from the New Brunswick approach to the bridge.
The following changes can be expected starting Monday, April 24:
- Speed limits will be reduced around the 200 metre work zone and traffic will be restricted to a single lane managed by a traffic light 24/7.
- Full bridge closure will occur twice for eight hours each, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 13 from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and another date in June to be advised.
- Oversize loads will only be permitted to cross on Mondays and Thursdays at noon.
- Emergency vehicles will be permitted to cross at all times during this work period.
“SCBL requests the travelling public to obey traffic signs, be patient and stay in your vehicle while waiting for traffic flow to resume,” said Alexis Reynaud, Deputy General Manager of SCBL.
“Our priority is to ensure the safety of our crews and the traveling public while minimizing our impact on traffic and while traffic disruptions are expected to be minimal, at this time, we invite the travelling public to plan ahead in consideration of this situation particularly in regards to the anticipated full closure periods,” added Mr. Reynaud.
RCMP will be stepping up their patrols during the work period to ensure the maintenance zone is safe.
“As I am sure everyone can appreciate, the bridge can be risky to bridge staff and when people are not following the posted limits, that makes it all that more dangerous for both the crew and general public,” stated RCMP Staff Sergeant Neil Logan.
“We want to ensure everyone’s safety so please be mindful of the construction zone during this time. I want to remind everyone that because of the increased danger and challenges these work zones present, fines are doubled in these areas,” added Logan.
