Shelter Movers aims to help 100 families flee domestic violence in Greater Moncton in its first year of operation.
Chapter director Renée Charron made a presentation to Riverview Town Council this week.
Charron said the volunteer-driven, non-profit organization started here in November with an official launch in January.
“Since then we’ve completed about 22 moves. I think by the end of March we’ll be at 29 or 30. We have a few planned over the next few weekends.”
Charron said the volunteer-driven organization has served clients as far away as Miramichi.
“In rural communities, women experience intimate partner violence at a higher rate – 75 percent – and is actually higher than in urban centres.”
Charron said about 55 volunteers have signed on to help so far but she adds more would always be welcome.
Shelter Movers invites men to join and show allyship in the cause.
Charron said their services are free to clients and noted how the average move would cost about $2,000.
The organization has forged a number of partnerships with businesses in the community.
