Environment Canada believes January could become one of the warmest ever since weather records began in the late 1800’s.
Meteorologist Jill Maepea said the warmth has been significant so far this month and follows a warmer than average December.
“The whole province of New Brunswick is running nearly six degrees above normal in terms of the mean temperature for the month and that is very much above normal,” noted Maepea.
“Given the consistent cloud cover and the lack of Arctic air outbreaks throughout eastern Canada, many parts of Ontario and Quebec are also well above normal so far this January – even warmer than we are.”
The warmer temperatures have led to more rain falling than snow this month compared to normal especially across southern New Brusnwick.
Looking at the long range forecast, Maepea said a shot of much colder air -although close to normal – is expected at the end of the month.
