Moncton’s emergency homeless shelter opened on Monday night at the Lions Community Centre on St. George Street.
In addition to housing up to 125 people each night, the City of Moncton said the facility will become a warming centre during daytime hours.
The temporary shelter consists of a large room with cots and while wrap-around services may be offered, city spokesperson Isabelle LeBlanc said details are still being finalized.
In an agreement with the Province of New Brunswick, The Humanity Project will be operating the shelter over the winter months.
LeBlanc said provincial officials will be looking to fill spaces at existing shelters before filling the emergency shelter.
“The tent set-up on the property will not be used, unless something significant changes. It will remain on site until we are certain there is no need. It was brought in because we were unsure that the facility would be ready in time,” said LeBlanc.
Members of the media have been told they won’t be permitted inside the facility this week.
She added everyone involved is highly focused on making sure the first week goes well.
