What kind of support will the Conservatives have in Atlantic Canada under new leader Pierre Poilievre?
This region has traditionally been Red Tory country for the Conservatives according to Wayne Hunt, a Mount Allison University politics professor.
“Atlantic Canada strongly supported Conservatives like Robert Stanfield who were willing to work across party lines and willing to take the best of tradition and move forward with it.”
Hunt says that will change with Poilievre as the party leader.
“That type of Red Toryism was very much represented one way or another by Jean Charest and Pierre Poilievre put to a close that chapter of Canadian history.”
Hunt says where we go from here is anyone’s guess at this point.
“I would say that Atlantic Canada will always be a more solid bastion of support for the Liberal Party than any other party. But even this part of the country will be up in flux.”
Hunt adds Poilievre may be a populist but he does support immigration which makes him stand apart from other such leaders on the political right.
