Traffic patterns will be studied in areas of Moncton where current and new developments are putting pressure on key corridors.
The transportation master plan will include areas such as Magic Mountain Road which has both one-way and two-way traffic through the Magnetic Hill attractions and high demand intersections along Mountain Road and Berry Mills Road.
René Lagacé, city manager of development engineering, told Moncton Council another area of focus will be the McLaughlin Drive and Elmwood Drive areas.
“Those are two sections of roadway that have seen a lot of development over the past few years and there’s also a lot of proposed development, especially along the northern section of Elmwood Drive, north of the TCH.”
In addition, preliminary design work will be carried out on a section of Mountain Road in Moncton from the Hildegard Drive area to Wheeler Boulevard for widening the roadway.
A traffic study in 2019 determined major improvements are needed including dedicated turning lanes.
“Essentially we’re trying determine if we need to buy land to do these recommendations and if so how much land and which businesses… which parking areas would be impacted,” said Lagacé.
City Council agreed to issue two requests for proposals for the projects, one RFP for the transportation master plan at a cost of $150,000 and another RFP for the Mountain Road preliminary design work at a cost of $125,000.
