A vessel-based survey spotted a familiar North Atlantic right whale on July 23 in the Gulf of St. Lawrence off eastern New Brunswick.
Department of Fisheries and Oceans officials say Snow Cone is still entangled in fishing gear while her calf which was born late last year was not spotted.
Snow Cone had last been sighted off Cape Cod, Massachusetts in late April and in the Gulf of St. Lawrence last August.
Snow Cone was first observed entangled in fishing gear in March 2021.
DFO officials say they don’t know what type of gear the whale is entangled in or where the gear came from.
The vessel-based survey was conducted by the Canadian Whale Institute, the Fédération régionale acadienne des pêcheurs professionnels and the New England Aquarium.
DFO added that updates will be provided as the situation warrants.
