The Moncton Public Library Board has pitched the idea of opening a second branch in the north end of the city.
In a presentation to Moncton City Council, Library Board chair Robert Hiscock noted how the city has only one main branch unlike other cities such as Saint John or Fredericton.
“The idea for a public branch somewhere in the city has been around for about a decade. When you look at the growth of the city and growth particularly in the north end, it starts to become a clear vision.”
Hiscock believes the best location would be near the North End YMCA on Twin Oaks Drive.
But not all councillors felt a new branch should be located in the north end.
Councillor Shawn Crossman thinks the overall city should be examined.
“Elmwood Drive is expanding and growing and the population base out there is going to grow. We have Auburn Circle right off Elmwood Drive. There are other areas in Sunny Brae that are isolated.”
Councillors Daniel Bourgeois and Charles Leger also felt an overall picture was needed before making a final decision about a new branch,
Hiscock said the library board is still in the early stages of the process and has begun discussions with various provincial officials.
