A Green Party MLA and the party’s education critic agrees with recent recommendations from New Brunswick’s Child and Youth Advocate.
Kelly Lamrock released a report Friday saying masking requirements should be reimplemented in schools pending a review by Pubic Health.
Memramcook-Tantramar MLA Megan Mitton feels COVID protocols should return for at least the next month and she says it should happen immediately.
Mitton adds rapid tests should also be available to all students and staff in schools, whether they have symptoms or not.
Meanwhile, the provincial Liberal Opposition is also frustrated over decisions being made by Public Health and the government.
Interim Liberal leader Roger Melanson says he’s very concerned, “Dr. Russell has full authority to make a decision. The Department of [Education and Early Childhood Development] also has full authority to make a decision. They’re not making the decision for the safety of our children and teachers. It’s because the premier and the politics are getting in the way.
Melanson says Public Health has a full responsibility to ensure everyone is learning and teaching in a safe environment, and believes mask mandates should be reinstated until at least May 21st as Nova Scotia has.
“They must have some scientific data. They must have some epidemiology statistics. They must understand the level of risk in other provinces to be able to make these types of decisions, but here it seems like politics is driving the decision making,” Melanson said.
