New Brunswick’s newest senator is now officially on the job in the upper chamber.
Jim Quinn was among eight new Canadian senators to be sworn in on Monday.
Quinn had been president and chief executive officer of Port Saint John since 2010.
Prior to that, he spent 32 years working in senior roles with the Canadian Coast Guard and other federal government departments.
“It’s something I would have never expected in my career,” Quinn told us in June after his appointment was announced.
He was one of three independent Senate appointments announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on June 22.
All three were recommended by the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments and chosen using a merit-based process.
There have been 55 independent appointments to the Senate made on the advice of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Senators are responsible for examining and revising legislation, investigating national issues, and representing regional, provincial and minority interests.
