Food Depot Alimentaire will receive a $150,000 boost from the federal government.
Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Ginette Petitpas Taylor announced the funding for a new refrigerated transport truck and to retrofit an existing truck.
Food Depot Alimentaire board president Dale Hicks says the organization has come a long way in 15 years after starting with one employee and a unreliable truck nicknamed “Old Blue”.
“We went from ‘Old Blue’ which has long been retired to… I think this new vehicle announced today will be the fifth vehicle in our fleet,” he noted.
“We’ve gone from distributing food around Greater Moncton to really the province now and that’s been with the help of government assistance through the years.”
The federal support flows from the Local Food Infrastructure Fund, a five-year, $50 million program under the Food Policy for Canada, which is aimed at community-based, not-for-profit organizations.
“For decades, Food Depot Alimentaire has been doing tremendous work in our community to address food insecurity in Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe, and never have their efforts been more important than now during this global pandemic,” said Petitpas Taylor.
“I’m delighted that our federal government is partnering with FDA to help increase its distribution capabilities so they can help an even larger population in our region.”
