Officials at the Greater Moncton Roméo LeBlanc International Airport are cautiously optimistic the airlines will be adding more flights in the coming weeks as pandemic restrictions ease.
CEO Bernard LeBlanc says the airport operated at only 10 percent capacity this spring and it’s not clear what the summer will look like.
“What’s going to happen in July, will there be bigger demand so that we go higher than 10 percent? So we’re still not in the recovery phase,” he noted.
“(We need to) get the partners that have stayed with us, like PAL and Air Canada, to ramp up their frequency, seat capacity and those type of things. That will probably take place between July and December, so there’s still a lot of work to be done there.”
PAL and Air Canada have provided reduced service in recent months while WestJet returned to the airport this week and Porter Airlines expects to relaunch in early August.
For several months, the Greater Moncton Airport was the only one in the province still offering flights.
Air service finally returned to the Fredericton and Saint John Airports earlier this week.
