The Lobster Capital of the World is ready to welcome back visitors this summer after a tough pandemic year for tourism in 2020.
Shediac mayor Roger Caissie has confidence this season will be better especially as New Brunswick gradually starts to reopen.
“So nowadays, folks are used to the public health guidelines and I think they are more willing to travel around the province.”
Caissie says Shediac’s marketing campaign this summer focused mainly on the province and the Atlantic Bubble with less emphasis on the rest of Canada or the United States.
After a pandemic letdown, Caissie notes how the demand for lobster has increased and while it is pushing prices up, it’s positive for the local economy.
“People are looking for more lobsters and that’s not only in our region but as well as across the country and across continents. So it benefits our industry here, in terms of the fishermen.”
Caissie adds more activities are resuming including the Market in the Park on Sundays and the Shediac Lobster Festival will return next month after being cancelled in 2020.
Organizers of the annual Shediac Lobster Festival (July 9-11) say the event will look different this year under COVID-19 guidelines and there will be no amusement rides.
