As part of a major green energy initiative, 500 homes in Shediac have been testing different technologies in a partnership between NB Power and Siemens Canada.
NB Power spokesperson Brent Staeben says the homes had smart meters installed about a year ago and that data is now being analyzed.
Some of the homes have been outfitted with smart thermostats and water heaters, solar rooftop panels and in-home battery storage systems.
“We’re working with these customers to understand how they can use those technologies to both help themselves save money, create green energy and more resiliency for the customer but also help the utility and customers across the province,” notes Staeben.
A sister project in Amherst, Nova Scotia will focus on green energy technologies for commercial buildings.
The federal government (Natural Resources Canada) has contributed $10.8 million for the two projects.
As part of the same smart energy initiative, a solar farm is also being developed on Lino Road in Shediac, just off Highway 15.
