Construction on the new Codiac RCMP building is set to begin next year.
The tri-communities are looking at spending over 45 million dollars for a new police headquarters.
But Grassroots NB has stated their opposition to the project.
The local activist group voiced concerns to Moncton city council last night.
Charles MacDougall says the cost of the build was determined before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Based on the conditional approval of the municipal capital borrowing board, we know that the city of Moncton is required to provide an updated cost for the building. We are under the impression that the cost will be much higher due to the rising cost of building materials caused by the pandemic,” he says.
Spokesperson Hafsah Mohammad says Grassroots NB is requesting the city cancel the capital expenditure completely.
“To give the public an opportunity to examine how policing serves communities through knowledge-gathering initiatives, town halls and police data, to explore data-driven services that are proven more affordable and effective for public safety and crime prevention and to remake our societies to be safe and healthy for everybody regardless or race, socioeconomic status or gender,” she says.
The group says it will be back at the next council meeting to present more details around procurement issues.
The “Let’s Chat Moncton” web page has more information on the new police headquarters and gives residents the opportunity to ask questions about the project.
