The City of Moncton is working on developing a policy around affordable housing.
This will apply to building permits and planning fee grants to encourage the development of housing options.
City planner Andrew Smith says the policy aims to reduce property improvement costs.
“So the types of fees are associated with building development permits, demolition, subdivision approval, rezoning variances and planning advisory committee applications. And so the policy is set up based on on a proportionate grant system,” he says.
Smith says one of the qualifications for the grant is that 30 per cent of units in a multiple unit dwelling should be deemed affordable.
Here is a sample calculation of the grant system:
This pilot program will also support funding from other levels of government.
Smith says due to the longer application process, it could take over two years before anything gets underway.
Councillor Blair Lawrence wondered if there could be updates every few months on the project.
“To me 24 months is infinitely too long, not just to know whether or not the program is working but just to keep council sort or apprised of the numbers and whether or not it’s doing what we want it to do,” he says
Lawrence requested that council get progress reports at a 6-month interval.
The new policy is intended to come into effect as of July 1st.
