Plans have been approved for a new Codiac RCMP building serving Greater Moncton near the corner of Assomption and Vaughan Harvey Boulevards.
The $45 million facility will be cost-shared among the tri-communities.
Moncton city councillor Charles Leger, who chairs the Codiac Regional Policing Authority, says the current building is outdated and the new one will be more functional.
“Many more windows, open spaces, obviously different security systems… a lot of security items. There will also be a perimeter and there will be the ability for all RCMP vehicles to be in a compound.”
Remediation work will be needed on the site since it is a former rail yard and the soil has contaminants.
Leger says that comes as no surprise and it is being factored into the plans.
A tender will be issued in early 2021 and construction is expected to start next year.
The building should be ready in 2023.
