As 2019 draws to a close, Twitter has rounded up the most popular hashtags, athletes, politicians and entertainers in Canada for this year.
The most mentioned hashtag was #cdnpoli given all the buzz surrounding the federal election.
A number of controversies put Justin Trudeau at the top of mentions for politicians followed by Andrew Scheer.
Singing sensation Shawn Mendes was the most mentioned Canadian Twitter account in 2019 and also the most popular musician overall.
The top female musician was Alessia Cara followed by Avril Lavigne and Celine Dion.
Ryan Reynolds was the most mentioned Canadian actor in Hollywood for the third time in four years and Sandra Oh was the top actress.
The Toronto Raptors won the NBA championship for the first time and were the most mentioned sports team followed by the Maple Leafs and the Blue Jays.
NBA player RJ Barrett was the top male athlete while tennis star Bianca Andreescu had a great year on the court and was the Canadian athlete with the most mentions overall – a first for a female.
The most used emoji in Canada was the “Face With Tears of Joy”.
