A holiday tradition continued today as more than 600 students and staff from Bessborough School took part in their annual turkey trot.
Students carried about 219 turkeys during the 1K march from the school to the St. George Boulevard Fire Station.
Dressed in a turkey costume every year, Bessborough principal Nick Mattatall says this is a charitable cause right in their backyard.
“We told the kids they need to look after their community – you know you take care of your own backyard. Sue Stultz and the Moncton firefighters have collected here for a lot of years and it’s just down the hill from our school. It’s a charity that’s really important to us,” noted Mattatall.
The turkeys were purchased thanks to about $3260 raised by students and staff and the school’s corporate partner McInnes Cooper.
This is the eleventh year for the march and the school decided to add a new twist this year.
Inspired by the popular Avengers movies, Mattatall says staff and a former student dressed up as the so-called Hunger Avengers with an Elf, Frosty the Snowman and the Swedish Chef chasing the Turkey (also known as the principal) down the hill.
