For the second time in three months, thieves have stolen copper wire from the YMCA of Greater Moncton.
Similar to a theft in September, the charitable organization says thieves removed copper wire from several light poles in the parking lot sometime early Wednesday morning.
CEO Zane Korytko says Codiac RCMP have been contacted and he’s calling for a thorough investigation.
“The YMCA isn’t the only business in the community that seems to be suffering from these types of thefts. Recently we read about Cabela’s having their wire taken as well as schools and businesses in the community are encountering the same situation.”
In light of these incidents, Korytko says security has also been hired at the new YMCA under construction in the North End at a cost of $2000 per week and may continue for six months or so until the building nears completion.
Repairs in September cost about $1,000 and the total for Wednesday’s theft is still being assessed.
Korytko adds it’s frustrating and really disheartening because those dollars could be much better spent on community programs.
