The executive director of House of Narazeth hopes to fill a gap within the system with the new homeless shelter.
Jean Dubé says the new shelter will include an area strictly for women.
“If you’re not a woman, you have no reason to be there,” says Dubé.
Dube says this is something that doesn’t currently exist and wanted all clients to feel safe.
Although the needs of the homeless are relatively similar when it comes to food and shelter, there is a significantly more of a concern for women when is comes to safety.
The area will accommodate women who aren’t abusing drugs or alcohol.
It features about 10 bunk beds, a seating area and a television.
“We want to make sure that when people come in here, they’re treated with dignity and they feel safe,” he says.
He says they hope to start welcoming guests within the next few weeks.
