Ten trees around Place 1604 in Dieppe are being replaced before the skating oval returns for the winter.
City officials say the existing lime trees lose their leaves well into the winter season and fall onto the ice.
The ice around the leaves melts on sunny days which creates small holes on the rink’s surface.
After careful study, the municipality determined removing the lime trees is necessary to ensure the safety of skaters.
As a result, those trees are being by replaced by Japanese lilacs which lose their leaves earlier in the fall.
The City of Dieppe also intends to plant ten trees at the Gauvin Road fire station.
