Students who will be attending the new Maplehurst Middle school patiently await the opening of the new facility.
The school opening was delayed due to construction.
Principal Liz Knowlan says they expect it to open in the new year as promised, “As far as we have been told, everything is on track. We should have the keys to the building and have time to do the cleaning and moving all of our furniture in and setting up the building prior to bringing the students in, in January.”
The students are currently divided between Northrop Frye and Evergreen schools. They are functioning as if they are attending the new north end school.
“We have a schedule that is built for a middle school that allows for some flexibility throughout our day and our students are really responding to that,” Knowlan says.
The classes and teachers are as they will be when the new facility opens.
Hundreds of students will be moving over to the middle school, “We’re are pushing 600 right now, but we had three new students start today. We are certainly anticipating growth. The school is being built for 750. It has 30 classrooms in the building, physical classrooms. We have 26 right now. So there is room to grow,” Knowlan says.
The first ever Maplehurst Welcome Event will be held tonight at 6:00 pm in the gym at Northrop Frye School. Parents will be able to sign up for volunteer committees, PSSC elections and Home and School.
