Fishermen in southeastern New Brunswick took precautions when Dorian blew through the region but no one thought the storm would be so intense.
The Maritime Fishermen’s Union says at least six boats were heavily damaged or destroyed mainly in the Petit-Cap area.
This is the middle of lobster season and union spokesperson Michel Richard says fishermen are very resourceful.
“Most of the guys that lost their boats are already fishing. They either rented a boat from somebody or I think one of two of them actually negotiated to start purchasing a boat from a fellow fishermen,” he says.
Richard notes how they lost a couple of days of fishing but he adds they may be able to recoup some losses despite losing their boats.
Fishermen expect a couple of storms every season but Richard says no one thought Dorian would be so destructive.
The lobster season ends October 10 for Fishing Area #25 in the Northumberland Strait.
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has said it has no intention of extending that date.
