The province’s consumer advocate for insurance says not having a car is not really an option for many New Brunswickers.
Michele Pelletier says many live in rural areas with communities being long distances from each other.
Pelletier is warning New Brunswickers to prepare for much higher auto insurance rates next year with some companies seeking increases of 25 percent or more.
She has some advice to help lower your rate.
“Continue to shop around and try to bundle up (auto insurance) with your home. And the other important thing we can do is to be a good driver… no speeding tickets and be careful,” she says.
Having auto insurance is mandatory but Pelletier says a small percentage of drivers don’t have insurance.
She adds it’s not a big problem and hopes with skyrocketing rates it won’t become one.
