Public health recently found that cooling towers of air conditioning systems were linked to the legionnaire’s disease outbreak in the Moncton area.
With help from city staff, a number of buildings with cooling towers were identified in the West End and one had high levels of legionnaire’s bacteria.
Regional medical officer of health Dr. Yves Legere says having some sort of registry would certainly have been a useful tool to help accelerate the process.
After any outbreak is over, Dr. Legere says a debriefing is held and a report is prepared.
He thinks a registry will be one of the recommendations from that report.
Twelve cases of legionnaire’s disease have been confirmed in the Moncton area.
There have been no fatalities and all patients are now recovering.
A lab in Quebec is helping to determine the source of the outbreak which may or may not be cooling towers in the West End.
