Public health is confirming three additional cases of legionnaire’s disease in Greater Moncton for a total of 12 cases but all patients are now recovering.
The focus was on 26 potential buildings with cooling towers in Moncton’s west end and testing at six of those sites identified one with high levels of legionnaire’s bacteria.
Regional medical officer of health Dr. Yves Leger says action was then taken to address the risk.
“The company was immediately contacted and was ordered to shut down the affected (cooling) towers. They were also ordered to immediately clean and do a thorough disinfection of the towers.”
Dr. Leger says sampling will continue on a weekly basis at the site to ensure the measures were effective in addressing that problem.
He adds this site may not be the source of the outbreak and they still working with two labs in Quebec for that confirmation.
Officials will not be releasing any information about the site since Dr. Leger believes it would not be helpful to ensure public safety.
