Renovations are underway at the Tom Donovan Arena in Renous which was this year’s Kraft Hockeyville winning community.
More than $700,000 has been donated from the private sector and government including $250,000 for being the contest winner.
Organizing committee member Sarah Mullin says the amount of support has been overwhelming.
“People are contacting us on a daily basis to donate. We had a couple of large businesses when we first won. Fifty-thousand had come in right off the bat.”
Mullin says one of the biggest problems for the arena in recent years has been the ice plant which is being replaced.
The canteen and exits are also being upgraded and a dressing room for females is being built.
This project is in memory of 14-year-old Thomas Dunn, a local hockey player who was killed last year in a dirt bike crash.
Meantime, more details on tickets for September’s NHL pre-season game at the K.C. Irving Centre in Bathurst will come later this summer.
