The Magnetic Hill Zoo’s two Amur Tigers will be in the spotlight when “Breakfast with the Tigers” returns this fall.
Visitors will receive a unique, educational experience and get a rare and up close look at Alik and Anya inside their own exhibit.
Zookeeper James Cann works with the tigers and notes how the animals are always locked away from them as a safety precaution.
“We have several different locks we’re working with, all controlled by several different keys. So that way we don’t make a mistake. Before we open every lock, we have to think ‘why am I opening this lock?’ You can’t just open a door in a rush or without thinking about it.”
He says the tigers are fed once a day but are given smaller amounts of food during training sessions as an incentive for certain behaviours.
Cann adds the more cooperation you can have with an animal, the safer it is to manage the animal.
“Breakfast with the Tigers” returns on select weekends in September and October.
