Residents in the old west end have expressed concerns over an increase in crime in their neighbourhood recently.
Cathy Manuel experienced this first hand.
At around 5am on Saturday morning, she awoke, and heard noises downstairs. Thinking it might have been the guest staying at her home, she went downstairs to check it out.
She found the living room lights were on, which was very strange, “I hollered out, to see if anyone would answer, and then I heard more noise. I then went out into the kitchen and saw doors to the backyard open, door to my garage open, things were also pulled out of drawers and my cupboard doors were open. I knew someone had been in my house.”
She went outside, and found the lights on in the car as well.
“My car keys were taken. He got into my car and started it, but I assume he couldn’t drive a standard so he got out and threw the keys on the front lawn,”Manuel says.
Bank cards, along with food, dog food and alcohol were all taken, along with the controller for her garage door.
Manuel says she ran out of her house and saw a man walking down the street. She shouted after him, asking if he had been in her house, but he responded, “No.”
She adds one of the concerning things, was the garden shears she found on her kitchen counter, “Had I quietly confronted him, or surprised him or taken him off guard, not knowing what would have happened or not knowing what his plan was with those shears, is a bit concerning.”
Her neighbour informed her, he had seen the whole thing happen, and he called RCMP.
She adds, from now on, she’ll be ensuring that all of her doors are locked at night, and she’ll consider installing an air conditioner, “This will ensure that I can hear better, without the fans going all night, and I can keep my windows closed when it is hot out.”
